30-Before-30: Rain Gear

It's not that exciting, but I've wanted a pair of rain boots for a while and the 30 things seemed like a great excuse. Bonus - I can wear my new jacket on our Yellowstone trip next week too.
And yes, I forced Matt to take this cheesy photo of me in the sprinkler. :)

30-Before-30: Fresh Fruit Pie

I hadn't made a pie with homemade crust in the longest time, so of course it was a perfect addition to the 30 things. The pie was delicious and perfect for breakfast :) - plus, I definitely found my new favorite crust recipe.
Summer Berry PieAdapted from Brown Eyed Baker's Fresh Blueberry Pie.

Ingredients

2 pie crusts
4 cups of fresh berries - I used blackberries and sliced strawberries
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Directions
Fill a pie pan with 1 round of dough and trim the edges with a knife or kitchen scissors, leaving 3/4 inch of overhang. Place the pan and 2nd dough round in the refrigerator to cool for at least 30 minutes.
Place the berries in a large bowl, combine with lemon juice, sugar, cornstarch, salt and cinnamon and toss to distribute evenly. Transfer to crust and dot with butter.
Cover with remaining dough round and trim edges neatly. Fold the edge of the top round under the edge of the bottom round and crimp the edges to seal. Using a knife cut an asterisk 4 to 5 inches across in the center of the top to allow steam to escape during baking.
Refrigerate the pie until the dough is firm, about 15-20 minutes, while preheating the oven to 375 degrees. Bake the pie until the crust is golden and the filling is thick and bubbling, about 45-55 minutes. Place on wire rack to cool completely.
Serve warm and enjoy!

Pâte Brisée
Straight from Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook.
Makes enough for one double-crust or two single-crust 9-inch pies.

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 sticks unsalted butter, cold, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup ice water, plus more if needed

Directions
In the bowl of a food processor, combine flour and salt; pulse to combine. Add the butter, and pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some larger pieces remaining, about 10 seconds. To mix by hand, combine dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl, then cut in butter with a pastry blender.
With the machine running, add the ice water through the feed tube in a slow, steady stream, just until the dough holds together without being wet or sticky. Do not process more than 30 seconds. Test by squeezing a small amount of the dough together; if it is still too crumbly, add a bit more water, 1 tablespoon at a time.
Turn out the dough onto a clean work surface. Divide in half, and place each half on a piece of plastic wrap. Shape into flattened disks. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight. The dough can be frozen for up to 1 month; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.

30-Before-30: Homemade Cinnamon Rolls!

Just because they're delicious and I've never tried it before, I added cinnamon rolls from scratch to my 30 things list.
I followed this Everyday Cinnamon Roll recipe from Our Best Bites, and the rolls turned out light and fluffy and were a real treat. I'm sure I'll make them again someday, but with over an hour and a half of total time it will have to be a special occasion!

30-Before-30: Polo

I think I found my new favorite sport...
Because it's right in our neck of the woods and we'd never been before, I included attend a polo match for one of my 30 things. I wish we'd done it sooner!

Prestonwood Polo plays just 3 minutes from our house and is fast-paced and fun. It's a beautiful game and best enjoyed with a picnic and cooler. We're going again soon - who's in?

Maggie + Jimmy

Maggie and Jimmy tied the knot last weekend! We had a wonderful time celebrating with them in Austin and catching up with family and friends.


Fun times included:
  • Thursday: Boys night out on 6th Street
  • Friday: Flower shopping, lunch at Chez Zee (yum), pedicures, wedding rehearsal, and a big dinner at Salt Lick (mmm!)
  • Saturday: Hair and makeup at a hip Austin salon, a little down time at the church, then the big event at All Saints' Episcopal Church (right on the UT campus) followed by the reception in the Student Center next door - complete with great yellow and gray decorations, a bluegrass band, and delicious fajitas!
  • Sunday: Drive back to DFW with all our motorcycle friends on the road after Austin's ROT Rally

Now that the big wedding has passed, it's safe to share a few photos from my sister's bridal portrait session at the Farmers Branch Historical Park over spring break. Maggie looked lovely and has definitely been my best model (except for Duncan of course).

30-Before-30: New Winery Visit [Maggie's Bachelorette Party!]

Because they're fun and usually beautiful, visiting a new winery was an easy addition to my 30 things. With my sister's wedding coming soon, her bachelorette shower at the Driftwood Winery fit the bill last weekend.
Nestled in the hill country, we enjoyed a group tasting, then cheesecake and gifts under a pavilion while a bluegrass band played. Families were enjoying wine with picnics at the Driftwood too - guess we'll have to go back and try that next time!

Other fun from Maggie's weekend:
  • Window shopping at The Domain, dinner at Kona Grill, and Sex at the City 2 at the Alamo Drafthouse
  • Brunch with tea at The Stepping Room, relaxing at Aloft, tapas for dinner at Malaga, smores for dessert!! at Halycon, and other bachelorette fun on 6th Street
  • Spending fun times with Jimmy's sister Cindy and Maggie's fun friends from high school, college, and PT school (thanks for the photos Hayley!)

30-Berfore-30: Pizza from Scratch

Something brand new for me, I recently made a homemade pizza for one of my 30 things.
The pizza was pretty good, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations - sometimes that's just what happens when you try to make a healthy recipe. Guess I'll just have to try again sometime; meanwhile, adding toppings to those ready-made thin crusts works just fine.
